SAVE LOKTAK LAKE
Restoring Livelihoods, Protecting Ecosystems
Funded by Rebuild India Fund - DASRA
Our Community & Their Livelihood :
The local communities living around Loktak Lake depend largely on the lake for their livelihood, with fishing being the primary source of income for most families.
Our Objective :
To create sustainable alternative livelihood opportunities that reduce over-dependence on fishing particularly during the fish breeding season while protecting the ecological balance of Loktak Lake.
Our Approach & Solutions :
Alternative Livelihood Development :-
We promote eco-friendly livelihood options that work in harmony with the lake ecosystem:
- Thangjing (Water Foxnut) plantation
- Tharo (Water Lily) cultivation
- Heikak (Water Caltrop) cultivation
These initiatives provide income opportunities without harming aquatic biodiversity.
Environmental Challenges We Address :-
Loktak Lake faces multiple environmental threats, including:
- Climate change
- Water pollution
- Deforestation
- Decline of endangered and indigenous species
Our programs are designed to address these challenges while supporting community resilience.
Lake Conservation & Fisheries Support :-
To sustain traditional fishing practices and restore biodiversity, we collaborate with the Fisheries Department, Manipur to:
- Release indigenous fish species into Loktak Lake
- Compensate for reduced fishing during breeding seasons
- Strengthen long-term ecological balance
Community Welfare & Essential Support :-
To improve daily living conditions and support education, we provide:
- One water filter per family to ensure access to safe drinking water
- Solar study lamps for students, promoting uninterrupted learning and clean energy use
